Congress passes a bill that makes LYNCHING a federal hate crime. Comments?

Of course dumb don may not sign it because it would OFFEND the racists in his base.

Which will cost more votes? Signing or refusing to sign it? Whatcha gonna do when the well runs dry?

Interesting that the four that voted against are all red-staters.

"Three Republicans voted against the measure: GOP members Ted Yoho of Florida, Louie Gohmert of Texas and Thomas Massie of Kentucky. The chamber's lone Independent, Justin Amash of Michigan—who famously switched from Republican to Independent over his support for impeaching President Donald Trump—also voted no.

    Sixteen members did not vote."

If a medical expert is interviewed on a talk show, I don't see how Trump can stop therm from answering questions.

Is that any worse than Trump wanting to shoot immigrants trying to get to America illegally in the legs?  Or building a FREAKING  moat with poison snakes and alligators in a stupid MOAT?????   if moron had his way, that would be happening.....

Or being infuriated that the Coronavirus thingy is diving down the stock market! His only schtick is a strong economy which goes away if the market tanking sticks. He is in Rumpelstiltskin stomping mode. Let the games begin little man. Stomp your way to oblivion. The dumb of don doesn't give a sh** about people dying. Being re-elected is the only thing. Isn't he a really sweet guy? Thank you for your reply Sharon and Happy Thursday! :) This post was edited by RosieG at February 27, 2020 11:03 AM MST

Now I'm curious, because while "lynching" implies a hanging - the term is actually defined as "VERB: (of a mob) kill (someone), especially by hanging, for an alleged offense with or without a legal trial."

When I looked up the legal definition, I got this: "Lynch law is the term used to denote the action of private persons inflicting punishment for offenses without due process of law. The act is usually done by a mob, seizing persons suspected of having committed an offense. The mob inflicts summary punishments without any legal warrant, sanction or trial. Today lynching is a felony in all states of the U.S."

So, there is no inherent racial tie to the term.
Technically, it wasn't even a lynching when a white mob hung a black man just for being black.  Because the motive wasn't "an alleged offense".
They were hung for being black.

IMO, it sounds like another example of Congress wasting time over something either because current laws aren't enforced, or they are ignorant of those laws.

Another example of your proclivity to devil's advocate Walt. I think it is insulting to African Americans. Have you ever heard Billie Holiday sing STRANGE FRUIT? It's about bodies hanging from limbs of trees. Sometimes you devil's advocate ugly and mean and cruel. This is one of those times. Thank you for your reply. It was not uplifting or noble. You can do better. Please do so. This post was edited by RosieG at February 28, 2020 2:03 AM MST

If you read the bill ... it does nothing new.  As I suspected.
It does not define "lynching" - so the legal definition stands.
That act was already illegal, and people could already be charged with conspiracy to commit the crime.

The real "insult" is the members of Congress are trying to "pull the wool over the eyes" of blacks, claiming Congress is doing something other than wasting time on "feel good" legislation.

Apologies then m'dear. I sit corrected. You can smack the crap outta me if ya wanna. Anyway what's the point? The only real doing that is being done is dumb don figgering out how to save his a** during the stockmarket dive. That's all he cares about thinks about dreams about. He will never change. Thank you for your reply. I wonder how the stockmarket will go today? We own no stocks and our modest investments have a guaranteed growth not tied to stock market activity. I just heard that the last 4 days $4 trillion in dollar value has been lost. That's a lot.  I'm gonna ask. :) This post was edited by RosieG at February 28, 2020 8:41 AM MST

I haven't even looked at my portfolio.
I withstood a couple years ago, when it lost 25% ... but it rebounded later.
And I still have a number of years before retirement.  (unless I win the lottery.  lol)

The worst hit to my portfolio so far, has been my employer dropping a couple that I was invested in because the fiduciary company wouldn't "back" them.  They were utility stocks, and I was getting a 20-30% return on them.  But my employer dropped them from our plan, so I had to invest elsewhere.  I'm still getting more than if I had stayed with the employer's pension plan, though.

Are you JOKING Walt? 20-30% ROI? I didn't know that was remotely possible. Wow! Losing that would certainly be something I'd notice. I don't really understand how anyone can "back" anything though. I guess it takes a serious investor to understand the lingo. Thank you for your reply.  Let's see we're in the same time zone so right now the market is down over 990 points. There is a small section on the lower right of the screen that is constantly showing fluctuations. Where it will end today at close I don't know. Thank you for your reply Good luck! :)
