Allegedly a New York City park will be used for temporarily burying bodies. Then what? Dig them up and rebury them elsewhere?

I guess the volume is so great that cemetaries are overflowing. Does anyone understand what is going on?

    I was talking with some coworkers about this ... and we don't understand why they don't just cremate the bodies.
    That would solve the space issue.

    Unless they are required to do an autopsy, for some reason.

    You know Walt I cannot imagine the horror New Yorkers face daily. Those whose job it is to take care of the dead. It is unfathomable to me that above and beyond the absolute tragedy of the nature of the passing they are faced with lack of room to hold the bodies. How they do it I don't understand and what having to do it will do to them I can't even guess. SIGH. There will be an end to it or a decline...a time to catch their breath. Then what? I feel so sorry for the people who have to be on the front lines dealing with it. Reading about it is horror enough. Having to participate? OMG.     Whether or not a body is cremated or buried lies with the person who once owned the body or with their family.  That’s common respect.  Currently there are no funerals allowed in NY (no gatherings of people).  Thus, they “save" the bodies for a time when they can be properly "laid to rest".  Meantime, the bodies keep stacking up and there are only so many refrigerated trucks (bodies break down 48-72 hours after death).  Temporarily burying them in Central park is simply a way to get them out of the way.

    We also found it surprising that New York ... or the eastern seaboard ... doesn't have any refrigerated warehouses that aren't being used, where the bodies could be stored.  Or refrigerated freight cars / shipping containers.

    Perhaps they are there, but those who own them they are afraid of contamination.  Most refrigerated warehouses/trucks are used for food purposes.

    I can understand that.
    But we were thinking there's probably some that haven't been used for a while, and the owner is looking to sell or lease - if not tear down.
    I know on the west coast, there are plenty of such warehouses in both small and large towns - due to the reduction in the fishing industry.
    And old "ice houses" that are no longer used, due to advances in refrigeration technology.

    The way people are dying by droves in isolation and having so many unclaimed bodies is the problem Shuhak. Relatives of the dying may already be dying or dead. Isn't that what is causing burial on an island in New York? Unclaimed bodies. There is no pause to reflect or realign. No time. How they are managing to try to keep is a mystery to me. The whole situation belongs in a Stephen King Horror story and I wish we could relegate it to that but we can't. Meanwhile the white house entertainer is salivating at the thought of opening the country. He does have his priorities. Thank you for your reply.

    i think they bury in the ground because it’s cold down there so they can store them assuming the fridge is full
