How do you KNOW when what you think is a valid connection between two things is truly so and not fiction?

The US inhabitants has by far the most guns in the world

The US allegedly has 25% of the prisons in the world and those imprisoned

Now is there a logical connection between the two stats? Or is it nonconnectd unconnected disconnect not connected?
