The more stars, the higher ranking general.
But power depends on job assignment.  A 2-star on the Joint Chiefs would have more "power" than a 5-star "punishment assigned" to Nowhere, Alaska.  lol

Here's an article from Cornell Law School on topic of Presidential CiC power:

:):):) Thank you Walt for your informative reply AND the link. Very nifty and I appreciate both! :) That "punishment assigned" to Nowhere , Alaska sounds very terrbly awful. And would "punishment" come from the Commander in chief? Who gives assignment to a 5-star?

I believe the Joint Chiefs are each responsible for their own branch ... with the President the ultimate authority, of course.
So that 2-star general on the JC, could issue orders to even generals with higher rank.

A two-star would not be on the JC. They are all 4-star. 5-stars are only used during wartime.

Could serve as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, with the qualification of "the commander of a unified or specified combatant command".

I couldn't come up with a GOOGLE search result that requires JC to be a certain rank.
Maybe it's buried in some US Code?

You always work fo the guy above you in rank. 3- stars work for 4-stars, 2-stars work for 3-stars. I don't need google...I was in the Navy for 20 years.

Are the Chiefs actual ranks, then?
EG: In the Navy, at what point is an Admiral automatically on the Joint Chiefs?

Joint Chiefs is a title, not a rank. They are appointed by the president with consent from the senate. They must be 4-stars.

    That's what I'm looking for.
Where it requires them to be 4-stars.
Is it an actual requirement, or just historic practice?

EG: What if the President wants to appoint someone other than a 4-star?

I believe each star is a rank, so receiving an additional star is a promotion.

Feel free to read the Constitution!

Under the Constitution, the President as Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy is the supreme military commander charged with the responsibility of protecting and defending the United States. The phrase “Army and Navy” is used in the Constitution as a means of describing all the armed forces of the United States.
