Doctors can diagnose a condition by the signs/symptoms. How do they backtrack to find a CAUSE to figger out what the trigger was?

You have to figger out a cause in order find a way to prevent it or an antidote or vaccine don't you?

How difficult is that because there could be many triggers? How can you ever know which particular one it was?
