"She/he is a saint." "He/she is an angel". Some people spend their entire lives helping others. What does it take to saint?

I think in the church the prospective saint must have performed a miracle. How can we "prove" a miracle? Isn't it always only hearsay...secondhand information? Does the prospective saint have to perform miracles on request to prove they are not a fluke?
