I think it is plain fear that is the cause. The ones who cleave unto the evil cruel despot dictators and obey without question. Why else?

All they have is fear of disobeying so they willingly obstinately cling tight to the might hoping they will not ever be the target. Living their entire lives as docile. Fighting only to preserve the monster and willing to kill those who stand up against the monster. They do it to save themselves. Born afraid live afraid and die afraid. What a lousy life that must be.
