Pacifists would do office work or repair tanks or be cooks or whatever they could do EXCEPT carry guns go into battle and kill humans. I think mostly it was due to their religions but I do think some Atheists were also Pacifists. They didn't want to kill their own species.
Since there is no longer any draft (yet) there is no need for Pacifists or draft dodgers. I guess that's an improvement of sorts.
