I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And value comes from the demand for it. Why is there a demand for bizarre weird ugly?

Ugly to my eye of course. But I wonder why ugly is so valued? And childlike scribbles become so desirable? And what looks like doodling can cost millions? Maybe the appreciative eye is able to see beyond the surface? Maybe it fills in things?

I don't get it.
