What is the cause of "dry" thunder storms? The loud CRACK of thunder and the sky lights up due to the lightning but no rain. Why?

    Dry air near the earth's surface. But enough moisture high up in the atmosphere to help form the lightning.

    I don't know if it's my imagination but it seemed to be way back then that we had a lot more of them when I was a kid. Thank you for your explanation m2c. So dry air causes thunder? Isn't that a weird thing though? Lots of stuff is weird. I wonder if the world is weirding out and that will be its last shout. WEIRD is where we came from. WEIRD is where we lived.     We do not get dry storms here. So I do not know if they have increased. 

    Dry air prevents rain from forming. Thunder is the result of lightning.
