Ever play THE GAME to get ahead? Office politics can get nasty. Did you play or stay away? Why?

I was never one for office politics and never will be.  I go to work (albeit not these days) to do my job, come home and at the end of the week, I'm rewarded with a paycheck.

Me too. One year we were due to get bonuses as usual. But "they" brought in a perfect stranger to interview each of each. The purpose? He wanted us to tell him how we contributed to the success of the company. I am not joking. We were supposed to sell ourselves to him I guess and that would go toward how large a bonus we would get. When I went in for the interview with this stranger that was what he asked me. What did I do to contribute to the success of the company? I told him the people I work with know the answer to that question and I would not try to sell myself or my value to a complete stranger. I got up and left. I told him I would not participate in it and whatever came from that was fine with me. Well no one questioned me about it. I expect he told the company president what I'd said. No one ever said diddly to me about it but at bonus time I got the biggest bonus I ever got. Which made me wonder if that was the point of the interview. I didn't ask. I don't care. I just was having none of it. Thank you for your reply L! :) This post was edited by RosieG at September 8, 2020 6:30 AM MDT

We do annual self-evaluations as well as being evaluated by those for whom we do our primary work.  I know the man I've worked for 29+ years will have good things to say.  The other person is relatively new and I was only working with hi for a couple of months when our office closed.  I still work for him from home, but I never got an opportunity to get to know his work, so it's been somewhat challenging.  He is also not as technologically capable as my other boss, so he needs a lot more "help."  I don't expect much of a bonus since those of us who are working from home get an additional $100 a month towards added expenses - telephone, electric costs, buying any supplies we need for home use.  I completely understand this and would not feel upset if there was no bonus.

I am not a fan of self-evaluation L. Not one bit. I think your work should speak for itself. Whether you are a good co-worker and cooperative and helpful matters. But asking you to evaluate yourself? Seriously how is that possibly helpful to anyone? I guess I just don't get it. If those with whom and for whom you work have no clue if you are of value or not unless you tell them then it's not the right place I'd want to work. You know if something goes well or doesn't. You know whether or not you gave it your best. If you have mostly successes then you know you are doing something right. If you don't then I expect your supervisor will go over with you how and where you can improve. Just my take on it. Thank you for your reply! :)

I think they do that so that if someone gives them a poor review, they can see where the possible disconnect lies.  I was given a poor review by someone I worked with for a short time.  In giving me an assignment, he always left out some significant piece of information that would allow me to do a complete job.  In my self-eval, I mentioned that there were associates who deliberately gave incorrect information or left information out.  When I sat down face-to-face with my office admin, I told her what this attorney did.  It seemed as though I was not the only one with that complaint.  After all these years, the office admin and I do this little "formal" dance at interview time.  I tell her she knows what I'm going to say, that I know what she's going to say and then she tells me what my raise is and my bonus.  Takes about 10 minutes.

Thank you for taking the time to explain YOUR situation L. That changes everything. I understand that we like some people more than we like others. I don't understand jealousy or envy and it seems that's what the person must have felt about you. Otherwise why set you up, sabotage you? To make you appear to be inadequate. I wonder how many people go through life knowing THEY ARE INADEQUATE so they purposely sabotage others? I probably do not want to know. SIGH. Happy Wednesday m'dear. The southern California fires are not as bad as those in northern California but yesterday the skies where relatively dark all day and we could smell the smoke. It got up to 83! Oh happy day! This morning we still smell it. Right now it's 70 in Hemet and the today is predicted to be 93. The fires are far enough away to not be a threat to us but close enough that we can smell it. They evacuated thousands of people and we were threatened again with rolling blackouts but so far we have not had to suffer through them. Our poor northern California friends are in dire straights. Weeks of bad air is not going to be a good thing for the lungs. Hope things are better weatherwise where you are! Fingers crossed. :) ((hugs))

I'm glad you haven't had to evacuate, but I know that if they make that call, you and Jim will do so.  One of those fires is burning through 1000 acres every half hour and the Santa Ana winds are making it impossible to get the fire under any kind of control.  It's even difficult, if not impossible, to fight it from the air due to lack of visibility.  I absolutely cannot imagine the destruction these fires are causing.  So far, there has been minimal loss of life, which is truly amazing, but those firefighters must be beyond exhausted at this point.

The weather here has been around 70 in the mornings and gets up to about 80-85, but it's been getting more humid and tomorrow we're supposed to get rain.  That's a good thing.  We still have a rain deficit.  My niece in Colorado had snow the day before yesterday!  I spoke with her earlier in the week and she said Colorado has a couple of their own fires, but that the smoke from California can be seen and felt.  No, the air cannot be good to breathe, but there is little choice other than to keep windows closed, use air conditioning and if you have an air purifier, that would be a good thing to keep on.

We have had fires in California ever since I can remember. We have a fire season every year. But this? I do not ever remember anything remotely close to this. And also all the other states having similar problems at the same time? Oregon Washington Idaho and even Colorado (where it SNOWED yesterday if you can believe it!). Climate change is going on. The deniers will continue to deny and lie till they die. But this is surely the very worst time our fires could be their worst...in the midst of a pandemic! I wonder who wrote the script for this? Thank you for your reply ! :)

California has suffered a 20-year drought, so it's no surprise that the fires have gotten worse over time.  Some of them have been ignited by people who should have known better.  The really raging one now was set off by embers from a firework at a gender reveal party and, while it was accidental, they should have known better.  I read that these people could be held responsible for death and damage caused.  There is no way any ordinary person could pay for that much damage - 1,000 acres burned every 30 minutes!  One of my nieces lives in Colorado, west of the Rockies, and she told me they can see the smoke from their house.  They, too, have had a couple of their own fires, but nothing like California.

What the he** is a "gender reveal party"? For cryin' out loud! So you know the gender of the kid. What's the big deal? If you want to tell folks what it is TELL THEM. But a gender reveal party? Sounds ABSURD and RIDICULOUS. I am FURIOUS that these dipsticks would do that NOW. Stupid dumbs is what they are. Stupid dumbs is what they will always be. Sheesh. Thank you for your reply L.

You sound like my sister. :)  She said pretty much the same thing.  Said if you want to know the gender of the baby, wait until it's born!!!   What I don't understand is how many times we've hear that the slightest spark can set off a raging fire, yet these morons didn't think that the firework could do the same thing?

You just honored me bigly sweetie. And about the tiniest spark igniting terrible fires doesn't EVERYONE KNOW THAT? A thing that didn't need to be done causes what it caused? I mean isn't that rubbing salt in the wound? I'm sure they feel real bad. Not their intention. But stupid dumb is never badly intentioned. It always thinks it's doing the right thing. Examples are all the adoring worshippers of the dipstick. SIGH. Now would be a great time for a mulligan...a do over. Go back in time and redo. Thank you for your reply L! :) This post was edited by RosieG at September 11, 2020 11:18 AM MDT

I'm sure they feel bad and they will have to live with this for the rest of their lives.  That much stupidity is hard to forgive.  Funny, one of the clues in the Daily News crossword today was a four letter word for "mulligan" - redo.  :)

Stuff like that makes me tingly. What are the odds of that occurring at the same time as my question? I always look for meaning and connection in everything. I really would like to know the odds. I have no idea how they could be calculated. Thank you for your reply L. :)

I guess you'd have to consult one of the Vegas odds-makers. :)
