If you were in the same boat, would you appreciate sympathy? Put yourself in the other person’s shoes. Say you were lying in a hospital bed wracked with pain from cancer. How would you feel if someone said to you, “Ha, ha, you got cancer! Shouldn’t have smoked now should you?”
Those words don’t help the situation; they only make the person who spoke them feel good about themselves. So the person did something dumb and is now paying for it. Does that make them less of a human being? Does that ease their suffering?
Would you tell a grieving widow, “So your husband drove drunk and killed himself, serves him right.”?
Anyone who would gloat over the suffering of another is less than human.
Being “human” means that one has the level of morality or intelligence that is associated with normal human beings. Just because many people fail/refuse to attain that level, doesn’t negate the level. It merely shows how depraved they are.
