What are "the bends"? Does your head just explode or do you simply go mad..crazy..nutty...insane and stay that way till you die? Can THE BENDS kill you on the spot? AEROEMBOLISM? Just looked it up. Sounds extremely DIRE. Know anyone who got "the bends" and survived intact?
