Fidel Castro described himself as a tripod! socialist marxist leninist. In other words a COMMUNIST! Why do folks ignore that?

The excuse for Cubans adoring the dumb cluck duck is that Castro was a SOCIALIST and they fled the country because of that. WHAT ABOUT WHADDABOUT the MARXIST LENINIST? Why is that ALWAYS EXCLUDED and NEVER MENTIONED? Because they are stupid dumb ignorant and have no clue what Castro represented or because it is politically savvy to pretend that Castro was ONLY a socialist so they could be the latino equivalent of an UNCLE TOM and Uncle Tomas could suck up to Republicans?

I don't get it.

If you put yourself in those Cuban shoes their support for Trump, or at least his Party, is understandable.

They or their parents had had a life of Communism / Marxism / Leninism / Socialism as all words on the same wrapping; so are not used to "socialism" as a concept far removed from USSR-style, one-party, hard-Left dictators. After all, the second 'S' in USSR stood for 'Socialist'; and that word is used by Communists as well as democratic left-wingers.

An interviewee on our News this evening - I think a Democrat - explained that and added sorrowfully that it is far easier for them to see, understand and believe a single slogan like "The Democrats are Socialist" than to read and absorb several sentences explaining Democrat Party ideals. They don't equate socialism with democracy (small 'd'); and would probably see Britain's Labour Party in the same way.

I do not understand why being a "socialist" is used an an epithet. I'm going to Google "was Jesus a Socialist"? I can't think he would be a communist or a capitalist or a fascist. I mean so much of what we are taught as Christians is to help others. Yet EVANGELICALS for example adore the dumb cluck duck who does nothing but harm insult attack lie. I don't get it. Thank you for your thoughtful opinion Durdle. Hypocrisy is endemic in homo saps...some way more than others.

Oh, any "-ist" is fair game for being used to attack the opposition, in politics!

I may be wrong but the US political spectrum seems generally to be to the Right of that in the UK and most NW European countries; so what would be seen in Britain as quite straightforward, mild trades-union and Labour Party socialist ideals would be far too Left for many American Republicans. However, we know these nuances because we live in countries with very broad political spectra and free discussion.

Those from Communist states are used to a very, very narrow definition of words like "socialist" and no discussion. So when they see Republican supporters call the Democrats (capital 'D') "socialist" they naturally assume the worst without understanding that firstly it's one Party trying to undermine the other by exaggerating, and secondly that anyway the Democrats' brand of socialism is probably not very left-wing by democratic socialist nations' standards, and still upholds democracy with a small 'd'.

Thank you for a sensible logical fair assessment Durdle. If you call someone SOCIALIST it is the very worst epithet you can call someone according to the extreme right-wing conservative FASCISTS. Who sez so? "They" the great unwashed mentally deficient sez so. Weird. I don't understand it at all but then I don't have to understand. Well, in the febrile atmosphere of recent US politics, yes, but strictly speaking a fascist government is a single-party, far-right dictatorship - like that of the original Fascist Party formed by Benito Mussolini in 1930s Italy.

"Socialism" is a much more woolly concept, used to cover a wide spectrum of left-wing views, governments and policies; but was often used by Communist governments to describe themselves.
