From the viewpoint of a sociopath what is the downside to being indifferent to the suffering of other people? Is there any?

    If one is indifferent to suffering then, in their mind, they've relinquish all responsibility.  Whatever happens, it cannot be their fault.  If it's not their fault, then their nagging inner voices are silenced.  Also there are no worries about being punished for any consequences that may arise from caring (be the punishment real or perceived).  In their mind there is no down side.  They have eliminated all negative reactions, the voices are quiet, and they can move on.
