D'ya think they purposely lied to him just to get the job knowing that once confirmed he wouldn't be able to touch them? He thought he owned them and he thought wrong. Did he make a mistake? Three mistakes? If he had it do over again I wonder if the folks he chose would have rolled over for him and overturned the election and order that he be kept as the president?
We will never know of course. But it is kinda tantalizing. What if?
