Discussion»Statements»Rosie's Corner» Vis a vis the recent Colonial Pipeline ransomeware cyber attack? RUSSIA may be behind it. What a shock if true, right?
A British intelligence expert interviewed on the News here pointed out two things that have been reported but not very well.
The attack was not on the IT system that controls the pipe-line, but on the owner's administrative system. It was the owning company who actually closed the pipe-line, I assume as a precaution.
Also, this was a ransom-ware attack almost certainly by a criminal gang, not by any government, wherever the gang might live. .
By sheer co-incidence one of your own senior security people is being interviewed on the radio now. I could not quite catch her name, unfortunately: Kirsten -?. She explained that this type of attack is becoming more common, and as here, often a double attack: it ransoms both the use of the system, and the confidential data extracted from it.
Thinking about it, the book-keeping system is far more valuable to the criminals than the technical system, because it contains commercial and personal information that can be exploited, e.g. by stealing customers' and employees' bank-account details.
The lady pointed out that private companies are not always very thorough with their own IT security, making it easy for such attacks. At least this attack's method has been analysed and circulated so other companies can protect themselves from it.
So not Putin's mob this time even if the crooks live in Russia.
Really Durdle? I read that with more investigation Russia was behind it. Oh well what does it matter? Someone somewhere for whatever reason will attack destroy sabotage. Rest assured there will be more to come. Thank you for your thoughtful and informative reply. Buckle up. It's going to be a bumpy ride! :)
Russians probably, but more likely Russian criminals than the Russian security services. Ransom attacks have become big business for the criminal gangs - they have happened in many countries, including the UK.
Well Biden says he contacted Putin and Putin of course denied any knowledge of it. When asked if he believed Putin he said he takes his word for it unless proven otherwise. Of course it's entirely possible. No matter how corrupt the head of a country is chances are he/she doesn't know about EVERYTHING that goes on. On the other hand the way Putin keeps trying to undermine sabotage spread disinformation and shore up FOOTOO I wouldn't put it past him for having instigated it. Trustworthy he ain't! Thank you for your reply Durdle. We may never know the whole truth! :(
