Here's the issue. My friend says if you tell a lie you are a liar. I say if you believe it to be true how are you lying?

My friend is correct tehcnically. The dictionary says a Liar is a person who tells lies.

But my contention is if the person truly believes what he/she is saying is the truth then how is he a LIAR? Yes it is a lie but not in his/her view. The person who passes it along believes that it is the truth.

I think to be a liar you have to know what you are saying is untrue. Do you?

It's splitting hairs I guess but I like to give the benefit of the doubt.  How can you be faulted for not knowing what you don't know? It's not willful or purposeful or perpetrated to deceive.

Sticky wicket. Again.
