    I'm sure I have said something with an equivalent underlying meaning.  How many times have we heard people simply say, "It's a free country."  That pretty much sends the same message.

    That reminds me of my mom asking why I did something that was wrong.  I always wanted to say, "Because I felt like it," but didn't have the nerve.
