Trying to trace back to the origins of LYNCHING is like trying to find a needle in an ENORMOUS haystack. Many theories..nothing solid. Why?

Allegedly the first recorded lynching in the United States of America was in St. Louis in 1835

A black man named McIntosh killed a sheriff while being taken to jail. When captured he was chained to a tree and burned to death on a corner lot downtown in front of a crowd of 1000!

However there is James Lynch FitzStephens, Mayor of GALWAY, IRELAND

He strung up his son from an upstairs window for murdering a Spanish house guest in 1493. Allegedly.

Then you have Charles and William Lynch of Virginia in the 1780's who each claim to have originated it. Charles Lynch in a private letter dated 1782 referenced the term LYNCH LAW.

What are LYNCH LAWS? Having the authority to punish suspected wrongdoers without having to bother with a formal legal trial.

Lynching was tightly associated with the JIM CROW DEEP SOUTH...the hanging of black males by white men

The Tuskegee Institute estimates that 3,442 black people were lynched between 1882-1968

There are also VIGILANTES who take the law into their own hands

Variety is the spice of life. Just the tip of the iceburg. All true some true none true?
