How far have we advanced in teaching machines to solve problems using the Artificial Neural Networks? (ANN)

If you remember the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey", they had a computer named Hal.  It solved problems by itself, given an unusual amount of data. It could solve more problems faster than human beings. Well, we have computers that can do this now. I don't know that much about them, but I am reading about it. I think they use apps to do this kind of work. 

I should ask about the applications in real life, but not now. I just want to know if we are close to having Hals, like in the movie. Guess we are getting ready to send robots to Mars first. More space junk will be left if we do.

    Sorry Marg, this one is so out of my league all I can do is make fun of Hal.
    I know he can open a door and close it and be stubborn and petulant.  And kill people.  I know he can do that.  But is there an app for him yet?

    That's ok. The problem was that it was AI, for artificial intelligence. The paper I was reading said AL. That is what "they" (the authors) called it. Never mind the error, answer the question!
