    He better not mess with seniors, they have already paid their dues , worked all their lives and are collecting social security (not an entitlement) like Obama calls it they put money into it.
      He should mess with all the entitlements given to the free loaders of which there are many.

    It ain't funny McGee. We rely on social security and medicare to live the life we do. We each have a very modest retir ement account which only provides a few hundred dollars a month to SUPPLEMENT social security.  If I didn't have Medicare when I got the big C in 2008 I'd be dead. Medicare pays 80% of the costs. Kaiser and we pay the 20% balance. PET promised he'd protect Medicare and Social Security. He also said he'd go after Hillary and has reneged on that. Paul Ryan is out to take out our life preserver. What if he succeeds? Even if PET vetoed it all Ryan needs is a 2/3 vote in the House and the Senate to Override the veto. So what happen to us if Ryan prevails and he gets his way?  Mahalo for your reply If you were old enough to qualify for social security and medicare I do not believe you would reply with a cartoon OS. The shoe would be on YOUR foot.   :)

    @RosieG -- I am perfectly fine with you, Jim, and other seniors receiving decent social insurance. I'm grateful that you have it and that it allowed you to survive your cancer.

    What I am NOT OK with is someone claiming that social insurance which benefits seniors is somehow fundamentally different than social insurance which benefits others.

    Mr. Thumb can take his "freeloaders" jab and...well, the TOS doesn't allow me to describe the actions/orifices involved...;-D...

    We wait and see. Who prevails? Will the worst that can happen happen? At this point how can it matter?  We wait and see. :(

    @RosieG -- I don't know the answer.

    There is a scene in the movie "Wall Street" where the Charlie Sheen character asks the Michael Douglas character (Gordon Gecko) why he must wreck a company just to add incrementally to Gecko's already prodigious wealth. Gecko replies, "Because IT'S WRECKABLE, dammit!"

    Trump and his ilk seem to have a similar mentality, that somehow by wrecking all sorts of government institutions which have served us reasonably well (not perfectly, but OK), the social necessities served by those government institutions will somehow magically be taken care of my "the free market" or "private charity" or "innovation."

    I do not understand that mentality. I can only hope there will be sufficient institutional and popular resistance to the wrecking impulse to mitigate the damage.

    In the meantime?  I have never been afraid of our government before OS. Never. Not once. Maybe I should have been but it's always served my needs rather well. My needs are few. But now? This time?  Terror has overtaken me. Too many bad a** EVIL bad apples are being appointed to run the government.  I foresee a  SCOTUS loaded with ALT RIGHT WHITE justices. Who will prevent it?  Anti-global warming believers are gonna be handling environmental thingies. Good luck with that! :( Anti-human health and human services folks are gonna be running the health and human services sections. You get the picture. The government is being overrun with folks in positions of authority who will destroy/demolish/desecrate/demean all we hold dear and there is not a dam* thing we can do about it. It is the most bizarre and unbelievable thing I have ever seen and it keeps getting worser every day. I see no daylight ahead. Only darkness.  :(

    ((hugs)) I dunno if you're a senior Tom. I'm 79 and my Jim is 81 and we are worried. We're scared to death. We don't live a luxurious life but we are doing just fine. Take away any of the legs..social security/medicare or both and we will struggle and suffer. PET PROMISED to protect Medicare and Social Security. Paul Ryan wants to destroy both. PET also promised to go after Hillary Clinton and once he won he said he had no interest in that. Both Jim and I are healthy old people. We could easily live another 20 years  or maybe even more. But take away our Medicare and social security? I have no idea what would happen. We each have a very modest retirement account which provides a few hundred dollars more each month. SUPPLEMENTING social security. Medicare pays 80% of our medical costs and our supplemental insurance in concert with us takes care of the other 20%. I had cancer in 2008. Without Medicare I'd be dead. No question. So what happens next? Who wins? The Paul Ryan crew? The PET who PROMISED to protect us? He is toothless. If the Senate and House conspire  they can override a presidential veto with 2/3 of the members voting. Can you give me/us some encouraging words? Color me worried m'dear. Very. Thank you for your reply and Happy Wednesday! :)

    Hi Rosie,  I wouldn't worry about losing your social security or Medicare, if any changes are made it would be for people not on it yet. I am in the same boat as you and have saved etc and hope for the best, the people who spend it as fast as they make it have plenty to worry about but not you so relax .

    Good points made by all in this thread. As Oldschool remarked, there are three "magic" phrases offered as solutions by the wacky right wing. They are "the free market, private charity, and innovation". They are euphemisms for the rich get richer, and we should all run like hell when they are uttered.
