    Those are not safety net programs; Social Security and Medicare are true entitlement programs for those who paid into them for a lifetime.

    Safety net programs are welfare, SSI, foodstamps, HUD Section 8 etc. etc.   Supposedly "safety net" programs are for those times people need some help.  In reality these are programs that families live on generation after generation.............it's their way of life.  Yes, I am for ending the career leeches.

    There may be changes for Social Security but I expect they will not affect seniors already collecting SS retirement benefits.  I can see Medicare changing to simply giving seniors an amount of money in an HSA and letting them buy their own insurance privately.  That can be nothing but better.  I would be happy to never have to have Medicare.

    @Rosie G -- RAW = Right-wing Authoritarian.

    F = a word beginning in F and ending in "....tard"

    In this particular instance, Thriftymaid displays typical RAWF hypocrisy by drawing distinctions between one kind of social welfare program where the recipients receive far more than they pay into the system (Social Security and Medicare) and other kinds of social welfare programs (see her list) mostly on the basis of who those recipients are or, at least, her prejudicial stereotype of who those recipients are.

    Mahalo for the info OS. I have lived a very sheltered life I guess. I never read or pay any attention to anything some people who are on my question threads write. I don't have the patience. Happy Friday! :)

    It's not right.  And a lot of people that collect SSI also need additional "entitlement" programs like food stamps to just survive!  These are your elderly, disabled, and working poor.

    I get so very tired of listening to people that think anyone that collects benefits is some sort of leech to society.  Of course there ARE true leeches, but the days of collecting big welfare checks and living high on the hog are long gone.  Even food stamps for the elderly are so minimal that they are lucky they can afford one dinner with them.

    I would know.  I watched my elderly mother struggle.  She got $12 a month in food stamps.  And I also personally know a guy that lives out of his car while working FULL time because he cannot get benefits.  He works a white collar job in a school district that uses his temp agency instead of hiring him.  He's also in his 60's and has worked his whole life.
