Monday, December 19, the Electoral College appointees nail the coffin shut. Will it be "Happy Days" or "Les Miserables" thereafter? WHY?

Any chance to avert doom? Probably not. There will dancing in the streets to the tune of 'Happy Days are Here Again" by some and mourning of all those who will be dressed in black with funereal dirges in the background for others. Sadly.

Trump won. The electoral college voters are appointed by the RNC in the states won by Trump and the DNC for the others.  They will vote as told.

They should be responsible and respectful of the state results that they are representing.

Shame on them. There should be a law stating they must vote the will of the people of the state they are representing.

  • Doing so will ensure not just the will but also the tyranny of the majority.  While I do not like representative democracies, I do see a reason for them.

I believe we need the electoral college or something similar.  However, the electoral voters are not voted on my the people.  They are appointed to represent their state and should vote as their state voted----otherwise they are not representing their state.

With the exceptions of Nebraska and Maine, the party chooses the electors for their candidate.  Essentially, when we cast a ballot for a presidential candidate, we are actually voting for the electors to represent our state at the electoral college.  Some states actually list these electors on the ballot under the candidate.

This is what you got, and how your system works. You do not vote by the popular vote but by an electoral.

Justice Robert Jackson wrote: "no one faithful to our history can deny that the plan originally contemplated what is implicit in its text – that electors would be free agents, to exercise an independent and nonpartisan judgment as to the men best qualified for the Nation's highest offices."

The founding fathers established the Electoral College in the Constitution as a compromise between election of the President by a vote in Congress and election of the President by a popular vote of qualified citizens

There is no Constitutional provision or Federal law that requires Electors to vote according to the results of the popular vote in their states. Some states, however, require Electors to cast their votes according to the popular vote. These pledges fall into two categories—Electors bound by state law and those bound by pledges to political parties.

I might have to quit. But this is not the case with Trump. It is not wrong to vote....even if others don't like who you are voting for.

Today, it is rare for Electors to disregard the popular vote by casting their electoral vote for someone other than their party's candidate. Electors generally hold a leadership position in their party or were chosen to recognize years of loyal service to the party. Throughout our history as a nation, more than 99 percent of Electors have voted as pledged.

If it is PROVEN that the candidate got there by illegal/immoral/criminal means why wouldn't that make a difference? Thank you for your reply tom! :)

It would---that's why the electors are interested in the possibility that Russia influenced the election.
