In the strictest legal sense, they are perfectly accurate in their assessment. The popular vote does not matter.

As I noted in a previous question on this topic, one candidate could (in principle) win the Presidency by "defeating" an opponent 40 votes to 70,000,000. When I asked AMers what level of popular/electoral vote disparity would cause them to object to the Electoral College, I mostly received answers based upon partisan preference for outcomes, not reasoned consideration of whether the EC excessively distorts our fundamental "one person one vote" democratic principles.

Here in the UK, we don't have an electoral college; the candidate with the most votes always wins. BUT, as regards the USA, the extent by which Hillary won the popular vote was only equivalent to the number of voters in California, and that is not enough. I was listening to a Democrat strategist talking about this on the radio a few nights ago. College or no college, the Democrats have problems. Bad ones, if they let a total idiot like Trump in!
