Putin calls for strengthening Russia's military nuclear potential. Didn't signed nuclear proliferation treaties REDUCE them?

So if Russia gets to strengthen its military nuclear potential then I guess the US will follow suit and strengthen the US and then what is to stop Iran or any other country  from rushing to build nuclear weapons?  You see my friends what those of you who voted for the P-E didn't consider is how the leaders of other countries would lie in wait to see exactly how they could take advantage of your pick. You have delighted Putin. You have delighted Netanyahu. You have brought so much joy to so many of them and terrified many of them. Did you know what you were doing?  And you did it anyway?  Why?

  • Russia has been keen on putting more effort into it's military arsenal for quite a few years.   They developed their new SATAN missile fairly recently.   If Putin and Russia is planning on developing more nuclear arsenal then it's been planned for quite some time.   I seriously doubt our election has much bearing on this.   If they are going to do it now, then they been planning on doing it, and they were going to do it no matter what.

There's a cause and effect fallacy here.

I don't follow you. What cause and effect fallacy? Thank you for your reply Glis and Happy Thursday.

  • That just because something happens after something else that it is proof that the one was caused by the other.
The idea that Putin and Russia planning on increasing their nuclear arsenal is directly caused by the USA's election results.   What would make one believe that a different outcome in our election would have led to Putin not asking for an increase in his nuclear arsenal?

As mentioned below, there are so many in their arsenal as is that any increase would only be a symbolic measure as the point of diminishing returns on increasing military might has long been passed by both Russia and the USA.  Adding more doesn't really increase any military strength or augment military capabilities.  Other than symbolically.  Really the scariest thing about them increasing their stockpile isn't them using the weapons( they have more than enough to use them now and destroy everything).  The scary part is them wasting so much money on them they collapse their system and are unable to secure them from other hands.   Which we already experienced with the fall of the Soviets.

Russia has approximately 7,000 nuclear weapons. Increasing such a large stockpile has zero direct geopolitical significance beyond inflating Putin's ego.

If Putin's needs a larger nuclear arsenal to compenstate for his own perceived shortcomings, it might set a bad precedent by aborgating existing nuclear non-proliferation treaties, but that's a secondary effect.

@RosieG -- That would be my interpretation. There's nothing practical anyone can do with 8,000 nuclear weapons that they can't already do with 7,000 nuclear weapons.

Makes sense. Maybe he is just rubbing it in. Maybe it is a companion piece to his bragging about  how Russia has the greatest military in the world. Mahalo for your reply OS! :)

    Hello Rosie:

I dunno..  You'd think with the budding friendship between Trump and Putin, he'd be REDUCING his stockpile..  No, huh?  Maybe ONE of those guys is being PLAYED..  Can you guess WHO?
