If you pride yourself on your keen intellect and ability to analyse you should step back. How much is filtered through rigid ideology?

  • LOL in my case, nope, I've stepped back, taken a very good look and can see I am still totally awesome! Now we have to accept that there are those who are not quite so omnipotent as me and yes, of course they would benefit from a good long look at their thinking, and why they think it..

Hahahahahahahahahaha! You are a riot m'dear! Thank you for your nifty and very humble answer. I appreciate it. You have no idea how many egotistical brain dead folks are out there. I'm so glad you are not one of them!  :)

    1) I do pride myself on my intellect.
    2) I have little ideology other than facts and research. That's why I don't discuss politics here.
    3) (You won't like this.) I have a strong dislike being told what I should or should not do.

  • Interesting.. my only thought tho was... erm why would you assume anyone doesn't like that you don't like being told what to do? Very few people, (lol with some notably kinky exceptions!) do.. surely then it goes without saying that you don't like to be told what to do?

Your number 3 in parentheses statement is very odd. What could possibly cause you to think that? What makes you think I like to be told what I should or should not do or think or feel or believe or say? Weird.  Off the wall. Unexpected. Thank you for your reply ele and Happy Sunday.

A keen intellect and the ability to analyze (ideally by way of formal study) are always positive abilities.

The problems is that what you assume is given may not either actually true, or at the very least, may not be agreed upon by others in the conversation.

At that point, I think that simply stating a position and why one thinks that is usually more valuable than trying to prove a point.

All involved may then at least come away with some additional insight into what's being discussed.

For example, the existence or non-existence of God and then the nature of that god if he does in fact exist.

Can't prove it or disprove it, but the what-ifs can be quite interesting to contemplate.

  • Interesting... but don't you think facts do matter sometimes? I tend to believe people try to prove a point when someone is so stubborn that they just cannot see, so in desperation one tends to try to let facts and figs to the talking?

Of course but ideologies seldom agree about what are actually facts..

So to open someone's mind,  I simply assume his facts are true and then reason to a different conclusion which is usually opposite to what he has concluded..

I agree with the on your last sentence. But the conversation is always endlessly precisely exactly the same. No new ground is ever covered tom. The believers believe and the non-believers don't and ever it will be thus. Continuing to argue something that is only opinion and can never be proved might be an interesting use of time but gets you nowhere. Thank you for your reply and Happy Sunday! :)

Everything for everyone is filtered through fake news, misinformation, lack of the truth and the inability to discover the truth due to the powers that have been.  In a class I took last semester I discovered truth twisting, outdated material and out and out lies in the class book the college actually charges for.  This post was edited by Art Lover at January 8, 2017 11:52 AM MST

  • You cynical thing you   speak for yourself.. yes, there are untruths out there, lies, opinions given as fact - but not everywhere.. we are pretty lucky here we have a full range of opinions so we can make up our own minds.. we also have pretty free press, (well at the moment anyway) and we are taught to question.. Indeed one of the functions of education is to teach us to question, and not just believe everything we hear...

My son's teacher came to me when he was 9 and said to me that she had given up trying to teach him about nature and science, because he knew more than she did.. She meant it nicely and I think most real educators are willing to be questioned and challenged.. I know my son's lecturers at uni were always happy to work with students and learn from them..

If there are times and places where that doesn't happen then we should challenge that..

I get that in history, much of what we learn has been written by the victors so would be slanted.. but even there you can take the time to learn from the opposite side too :)

Everything gets filtered through ideology, but the ideology can be more or less rigid.

    Hello Rosie:

I AM an ideologue..  My reading of the Constitution is that America rigidly stands for freedom for all.  So, I looked for a political party that was CLOSEST to that ideology.  It was an easy choice..  The other  party stands for freedom for a few..
