If you could own an exotic pet, what would it be and why?

I wouldn't, unless it had been rescued and couldn't be rehabbed back into the wild. Were that the case, I would probably go with a fox. Very dog-like and a manageable size. Incredibly cute, smart and a bit mischievous; would be a good fit here, I think. :)

We have 2 African Spurred Tortoises. They should live 100+ yrs and grow to over 100 lbs. One is a hatchling and the other is about 3 yrs old.

Are they exotic? If not then my husband wants a dwarf alligator.

I'm curious if you have people lined up to care for them after you and your husband are gone? I know that this can be an issue for people with parrots with similar life expectancy. I once visited a zoo type facility and learned that's how they got almost all of their exotic birds, and that they're constantly having to turn birds away due to lack of room/resources.

  • My dog is exotic enough for me. She'd get the huffs if I brought home a competitor.

The only way I would have one is if I had the room, the money, and it were a rescue that couldn't live in the wild. A lot of people have an over simplified idea what it is to care for such animals. My sister-in-law worked for a zoo. People who got exotic pets would then try to turn them over to the zoo. Zoos cannot take them. There is no way too know if they could be carriers of disease, and then could infect other animals. She rescued in those cases. She has a wallaroo, and a monkey, along with several reptiles, and a rabbit. she used to have another monkey, rabbit and a serval. She is licensed and has to go through inspections to keep them. She and my brother also cannot just go away anytime they want. It isn't like finding a dog sitter. You need someone who can handle feeding such animals. They all have different foods and if they don't know you, they just may bite you. Just finding a vet can be a problem.

  • A tiger. I love cats and tigers are my favorite animal of all time. I think they are one of the most beautiful creatures on the planet.
