Why are guns the outstanding weapon of choice to own rather than any other weapon? Are they more accurate, cheaper, easier to operate? The Constitution says "bear arms". Doesn't say what kind. Why?

When you read the "bear arms" you have to take it in the context of the time the statement was written.

To bear arms is to carry a weapon. It includes all weapons including knives and swords as well as rifles and pistols.

Up till the second world war civilians had better small arm weapons than the military. Up till 1933 civilians could carry automatic weapons. Organized crime was the reason automatic weapons were outlawed for civilians. Not because the average citizen were using then for crime.

Well if a person wants to own a weapon for self protection then they will prefer a weapon they can use at range to hit the threat before the threat gets in striking range of them.. They will also want a Pistol because it is easy to carry with them and thus is at hand quickly when they are facing an attacker..  But a person could also obtain a tasar shock gun if they want a non-lethal option.. But you only get one shot so if you miss you're stuffed...

People carry guns because it's a lot easier than carrying a canon.

Why are they the weapon of choice??  Well, they're little.  They pack a bigger punch than a taser, or pepper spray, and you can kill somebody WITHOUT getting blood on your dress.
