Have you been stuck at a place for a long time?

  • "Yes" ... the company I worked for asked for volunteers to transfer to another division for a temporary assignment. When we got there, they told us that we couldn't come back (for undisclosed reasons). I was there for four years.

    Sounds like a "living hell".

  • Because it was so "under-handed," it did make those four years seem a lot longer.

    Sadly, not uncommon.

Jobs are one of those things we don't have a lot of control over until we can find something else (which can be a lot hard work and luck).

  • You're right ... but I made it work for me and now I look at it as ... "they did me a favor." :)

That's good Alf.  And it's the only way to survive in the work world; make the best of what is given you.  Almost every move that was sort of forced on me was for the better in the long run.

Some relationships I have been in were way overdue for a slice and dice, "I'm outta here!"

  • Mrs Didge and I moved into our present home in 1963. I wouldn't call it stuck, though: we love living on the mountains.

I was stuck in a job for 25 years because we had lots of kids and I didn't want to risk doing something else till they were full grown. Then I moved on.

I think these days, if someone is at the same job more than 5 years, it's considered a long time.  My dad worked at the same place for nearly 35 years and kept the same residence for over 50.

  • That's true in a lot of places, PeaPod. Even in Japan, where employment used to be for life, there has been a move away from long term employment.
