It has to answer all questions and that is not possible so there are contradictions.

  • Religious or not, most of us can't always live up to our ideals.

One of the problems with religion is that its role is to continually preach and remind believers of what they should do.

It's often thought that sincere belief and repentance is enough to transform a sinner into a virtuous person.

The trouble is that belief may not be enough to act as a restraint on powerful emotions or addictive behaviours.

People can easily delude themselves, hide, minimise, justify, deny, compartmentalise, disassociate ...

One of my problems as an atheist has always been the shock I feel at the hypocrisy and evil committed by deeply religious people, the pedophile priests of churches, the drunken whoring of married devout Muslims, the persecution of Tamils by Buddhists, the financial greed and power playing of all religions... there's no end to it.

I've slowly come to the conclusion that believing or not believing makes no difference to whether someone is a good person.

I think ethical behaviour comes from only one source, compassion and empathy for any being with the capacity to suffer.

Examples would be the Christian church and now the Catholic church ignoring what the Bible states about marriage and embracing gay marriage.

If there Bible states God says one thing and they go another way that is hypocritical of their religious beliefs in Gods word.

Your example is not an example of Hypocrisy in a religion..

Where in the Bible does it ever have two opposite and hypocritical stances on homosexual marriage?

And you mentioned marriage in general..

Where in the Bible does it have two opposite and hypocritical stances on marriage in general?

The Christian religion is what the Bible declares.. It is not what church people declare which is against the teachings of the Bible.  If they are teaching different to the Bible then they are not teaching the Biblical religion of Christianity and thus the religion of Christianity has not been shown to be hypocritical..

The religion is the people. When the leaders of the religion change the doctrine they are being hypocritical. People wrote the Bible then change the meaning. That is hypocritical.

    Simple Definition of hypocrite

    • : a person who claims or pretends to have certain beliefs about what is right but who behaves in a way that disagrees with those beliefs

It's not the religions themselves that are filled with hypocrisy, it's the selfish twits who believe in them and use them as a vehicle to justify their own hypocrisy.

No the religion is NOT the people...

The religion is the set of teachings and beliefs contained within the teachings of that religion.. In the case of Christianity that is all contained in the Bible scriptures..

Human beings are not the religion.  The Bible says what it says no matter what some person says that is totally different to what the Bible says..

    Religions aren't hypocritical.  People are.

Unfortunately, some religious people can get very judgmental of others while ignoring their own faults.
