  • I once had the task of teaching a receptionist how to use a complex Erickson PABX (telephone switchboard). I saw beside her for almost four hours while she became familiar with it and before I left she said, "I don't know how I'd have coped without you. I've never seen one of these before." That's when I confessed that I hadn't seen one either but I had studied the handbook. 

    The answer to your question? When all else fails, read the handbook. :)
