Did You Know This Is The 152nd Anniversary of the USA's First Successful Assassination of a Sitting President?

April 14, 1865...and then Sir John Tenniel, the political brilliant satirist for PUNCH Magazine who had lampooned President Lincoln mercilessly, submitted this to Punch after Lincoln's death.

  • It is also the 105th anniversary of the Titanic's ill-fated collision with a North Atlantic iceberg, and the 488th anniversary of the birth of brilliant Dutch mathematician Christiaan Huygens, who among many other achievements, discovered Saturn's moon Titan and designed the first pendulum clocks, revolutionizing timekeeping.

  • Hi Zee, yes I had overlooked the Titanic...knowing it was near this date also, found myself thinking of Lincoln...and I did not even realize this was the date of Huygens' birth!

  • Huygens was a prominent mind of the 17th century European Enlightenment period and a seminal figure in my chosen field of engineering.

  • He was something of a polymath, I think...I knew of him largely because of his work with optics, which I delved a bit because of all my years using microscopes...

  • Quite a turnaround for Tenniel. I can't imagine anybody paying such a tribute if anything untoward happened in the current administration.

  • I'm sure you've noticed that this year's calendar is identical to the one in 1865.
