In most circumstances, I would agree that the rights of all should be protected. At a time when the rights of "religious folks" are under attack, I can see why they feel a need for some sort of protection. There seems to be a strange brand of bias in a culture that fights for the rights of one religious creed over another. We're experiencing a trend that will eventually force Christianity underground as it once was centuries ago.
There is a certain irony here, persecution tend to make a religion grow, rather than shrink, Christianity grew and spread like wildfire as long as the Romans tried to suppress it. If that logic hold then persecuting other religions is about the most idiotic thing religious leaders can do. Simply suicidal.
