Simple answer: Because the US still have a lot of coal, but have used up most of its oil.
It is not so much the source of energy we should focus on, but how efficiently it is used :-)), And how much it is allowed to pollute.
Germany is another highly industrialized nation that use a lot of coal. But they have been developing better and better particle filters etc, so they are pretty clean pollution-vise now.
