EXISTENTIALISM

"It is a philosophical attitude that stresses the individuals' unique position as a self-determining agent responsible for the authenticity of his/her choices."

Aren't we ALWAYS responsible for the authenticity of our choices? How can a philosophy be built upon something as basic and inescapable as that? Anyone know?
