Republican Theodore Roosevelt lost his son Quentin in WWI.

John Eisenhower, the son of Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower, served with a combat infantry unit in Korea.

In a bid to save an election, democrat Senator Al Gore Sr. begged Al Gore Jr. to quit dodging service. Little Al went, but strings were pulled to give him non-hazardous duties writing a few articles far from the action. He got an early-out after five months in the country, less than half the standard one year tour of duty.

Al Gore Sr. lost that election, by the way. I guess it was not worth Little Al sticking around after it didn't save his daddy's job.
