Telling a lie that doesn't benefit you at all but does save someone from pain/hurt I think is ok or at least not gawd-awful. You lie to cover your a** because you know you did wrong and are too chicken to own up to it. When you lie to save someone from pain..especially someone you love...I think it's not reprehensible. Truth is better mostly. Kindness is better still.
