Most likely having pagan roots. This belief is held by individuals in a great number of places around the world, including Europe, China, Africa, and North and South America. This belief likely has existed in Europe since 600 b.c.e. among cultic people. The cells first associated rabbits  (the whole rabbit)with good luck. Since rabbits live underground in burrows, it was believed they could communicate with the spirits of the underworld. The common north American myth originates from the African-American folk spirituality known as hoodoo.
