How much danger would you place yourself in for a job? Why?

  • Not too much now that I'm older and I have a child.
This question reminds of when I stopped at a liquor store to buy some beer and when I walked in I could see a huge hole in the wall covered just by insulation and plastic that was potruding outward.
The young man behind the counter said that a drunk driver smashed his car through the wall in the middle of the afternoon coming to get more booze.
He told me the guy working was scared that it was a car full of guys looking to rob the place and the car smashed through right by the counter.
He then showed me where some people who did try to rob the liquor store had left big slices in the counter from a machete that they used in the robbery.
He then showed me that he had pepper spray and a baton behind the counter in case of a robbery.

I just shook my head thinking to myself that there's no way in hell I would be fighting robbers to keep my job at a liquor store.
I told him "I hope they pay you good."

If I worked there and a robber came in with a machete I would open the register, grab my jacket and say " Help yourself to whatever you want, I quit." This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at September 11, 2017 12:12 PM MDT

I've often wondered why on earth anyone would take job at a 7-11 and work a night shift all alone. Or a liquor store? I mean that's just asking for trouble. I'd be scared to death 24/7. How do you work when you're scared to death? Or even a pizza place? A couple of employees are all it takes to run one...one takes the order, one bakes the pizza. A couple of thugs walk in armed and then what happens? Or a gas station or even a motel? Late at night or even in daylight it seems dangerous to me. Of course when you're a parent  you have to be doubly careful because it isn't only about you any longer.  Years ago my parents had a friend who owned a liquor store. He was shot and killed one night. Just like that he was gone. Left his wife and kids. Just like that through no fault of his own. Thank you for your thoughtful answer Truthseeker! :)

The kids were young. All the friends rallied around. She didn't have to worry about money because her husband was a very successful guy so that was a huge blessing. After a few years had passed and the kids were grown she remarried. She married a very nice guy. Thank you for sweet reply Truthseeker. Stuff like that never makes any sense to me. Life is filled with it. Maybe one day we will be able to figure out the WHY?  :)

Well m'dear thank you for your service. Glad you made it through to retirement. Thank you for your reply and Happy Monday Stickman. I know this is a very impertinent question so please ignore it if it makes you uncomfy. Did you ever have to kill someone? Or rather I should ask this. If you ever had to kill someone do you think you'd ever get over it? Now of course if you were forced to do something like that to save others' lives then it would be unavoidable and what you were trained to do. But still. Taking a life would have to be a very difficult thing to do. I can't even almost imagine what our troops have to go through when they fight in wars. How do you block that out or come to terms with it? Anyway if you find a question in there you want to answer please do. If not then please don't worry about it. :) This post was edited by RosieG at September 11, 2017 12:12 PM MDT

  • Fortunately I never had to take a life's of another. I wouldn't have hesitated to take the life of a bad guy to save the lives of innocent people. I'm not sure how'd deal with it. I believe it's one of those you don't know until you're in that situation. The worst part was having to people their loved ones were gone.

  • Not much. I work in education so I guess there's always the chance of a school shooting, which seem to be in vogue these days...

That is so beyond scary Nevan B. In the long-ago good old days schools were havens where kids were safe. Now? They are sitting ducks for some weaponized nutjob to just start firing. Teachers die protecting their kids in those circumstances. It's a very sad of affairs.  Thank you for your reply and Happy Monday to thee! :)

    Not much.

I am healthy and I don't get sick very easily.   So, I have no problem massaging and touching people to help them, but I am not standing on a construction plank 50 stories up to wash windows.
