How much "carelessness" should kids be allowed to exhibit?

Should elementary-aged kids be punished for doing things like tracking mud on a carpet or does everyone basically get a free pass, so long as they do their best to right their mistakes?

Depends on how much they have been reminded not to do something. Also would depend on age.

I'm an Elementary School teacher and children need to be taught empathy, to care for others/property ,  so many of them, especially at a young age, 6 years old, are disrespecting property, authority, and bullying other students.

  • "You make a mess, you clean it up."  In the old days, they called it learning responsibility.  Now a days, it's called punishment.

Tell them to clean it up. If they say no, THEN there will be a problem.

A bit less than they want, and a bit more than you think proper.

They're old enough to clean up after themselves and if the willingness isn't there, they'll find that the things they enjoy are noticeably absent.
