What does the American flag represent to you? What is in our Constitution? The right to peaceably assemble? Or something more insidious?

Did patriots die for our flag or die to protect the freedoms of which the flag is but a symbol?

    The FLAG is a symbol

The symbol is not what is at stake, the meaning behind the symbol is what is at stake.

How do we ever salute something that stands for NOTHING at all any longer.

Except maybe the BOMBS BURSING IN AIR, even the national anthem is a lie.

What part (or which parts) of the National Anthem is (or are) a lie?

I think Rona is referring to thid:
"O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;"
because 'bombs bursting in air' are idiscriminate killers and firestarters. Veapons of Mass Destruction before that term was even invented.
but I rather think she is wrong, as those bombs came from people who wanted to harm the US, not the army valiantly defending it.

Even long before that, history tell us if forest fires being used as VMDs (and the army doing it getting condemned for it) This post was edited by JakobA the unAmerican. at September 26, 2017 3:55 AM MDT

There are rules that "should be folloed to show proper restpect". eg "a worn out flag should be burned, not just thrown into the trash."
But there are no legal consequense for breaking those rules, just look at all the flag-bikinis you find on the beaches even though one of the rules say not to use the flag as clothing. Sometimes even used in displays of respect for the flag ;)

No, one does not just burn a copy of the Stars and Strips if it becomes worn, tattered, faded or soiled. There's a special ceremony involved with that process. Usually organizations like the American Legion or the Boy Scouts have regular ceremonies for that kind of "retirement" and will be all too glad to take care of any flag that is offered to them.

And no, the bikini with the fabric patterns similar to the US Flag is NOT a US Flag, contrary to what you seem to think. Although I do know a lot of guys (myself included) that will gladly salute that particular one.

US Flag code §176 section (k) "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning."
Other forms of disposal are permitted as long as they are 'dignified'. You have the right to employ a 'flag undertaker' as long as you feel his procedure is 'dignified'.
But the recommended way of disposal is burning the worn out flag.
