ASSAULT WEAPON. See definition below. Some say there is no such thing. Why?

ASSAULT WEAPON

"It is a term used  in the United States to define some types of firearms . The definition varies among regulating jurisdictions but usually includes semi-automatic firearms with a detachable magazine and a pistol grip and sometimes other features such as a flash suppressor or barrel shroud"

Now when a person says "there is no such thing" about anything I wonder if he/she even investigated/researched/ used a  dictionary or Googled it. Puzzling.

The term "assault weapon" is a made up term used by politicians to describe certain long guns which they do not like.  The definition will vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction and person to person. It is not the same a saying this is a shotgun or this is a rifle etc which have clear universal definition.
Generally the difference between the an "assault weapon" and hunting weapon is in appearance.
