The tail rotor turns perpendicular to the main rotor.
Also, there are helicopters with dual rotors, one beneath the other, that turn in opposite directions. Such helicopters don't have tail rotors, and the rotors counteract the rotational torque of each other to prevent the cabin from spinning.
