    No.
Both are what is commonly referred to as stuffing but the term stuffing is actually only accurate when it's cooked inside the turkey.
When it's cooked separate, it's supposed to be referred to as dressing.

  • Yes they are.   They are pretty much interchangeable but strictly speaking it's all dressing, but only stuffing if it's cooked in the bird.  Dressing can be in the bird or cooked in the same pan.

On Thanksgiving we have dressing here in the South.  It's made with day-old cornbread.  Other parts of the country make stuffing with bread and/or croutons.

They are not the dame thing.

  • How ar stuffing and dressing any different other than one HAS to be in the bird and the other can be either or?
They are the same thing.  There are different types of dressing/stuffing.   Some people put sausage in it for some unholy reason.

Either recipe can be put into the bird if the cook doesn't know any better.  They are different foods and basically reside in different parts of the country. This post was edited by Thriftymaid at November 24, 2017 11:39 PM MST

  • Nah.  They are both seasoned stale bread that is cooked with the juices of the bird if any good.   Here in NY you hear both terms a perfect 50/50.   Not trying to be a jerk, but explain what is so different about them?
Dressing is just the stuffing that didn't fit in the bird.  Stuffing is dressing, dressing isn't necessarily stuffing.

In NY you probably have never had dressing, which is made with corn bread.  It is  nothing like yankee bread stuffing.  :)  Either could be put into the bird but it's a dangerous thing to do and I have not known of anyone doing it in the last 25 years.

  • No, no.. Stuffing can be made with cornbread too and dressing can be made without.  Actually my family USES cornbread. Nor does the entire South use it.  Cornbread is still bread.  You're just making cornbread dressing/stuffing.
Stuffing a bird is not dangerous and makes the dressing and bird taste better.  It just doesn't hold enough to not make some into regular dressing though.  All those fancy lad TV chefs say it dries it out but only if you don't know what you are doing.  They are also the ones who usually say to brine the turkey which freaking ruins it.

I always understood that "stuffing" had been "stuffed" and cooked inside the turkey ... and "dressing" was something cooked outside, or separate from, the turkey.

The ingredients could be the same.

That really has nothing to do with it.  You can put either into the bird.  You can buy boxed stuffing mix and eat it right out of the pot without a bird even in the house.  Stuffing is stuffing whether it gets stuffed into anything or not.

And you can buy cookie dough in a tube and eat it without baking it ... but it's not "cookie" dough unless it's used for cookies.  It's just dough.

    LOL

Technically stuffing is putting something inside something.  Dressing is getting something ready for cooking or the table which could include stuffing it or seasoning it or pouring sauce on it or many other things.  Those are what those words mean as verbs.  As nouns they refer to anything that is meant to stuff something or anything you would use to dress something.
