Some will fight to the death to preserve political partisan ideology no matter how destructive/demeaning/hateful. Why?

These very same folks would not do a dam* thing to fight on behalf of others unless it was their "own kind". Were they born that way or taught to be that way? Once the pattern is set is it impossible to reset? Because?
