How large part of intelligence is being able to foresee the potential consequences of your words and actions? Why?

You react instantly to everything all the time in the moment.  You never stop to reflect upon whether it would be wiser to be quiet. You just let 'er rip. How long does it take before you get into serious trouble by doing that?
