Some of us don't need mementos and souvenirs because when we were there we were really there.  So our experiences are parts of us.  And we can recall them if we choose to but even if we don't we are shaped by them.

I'm sure that is very true for you og. Being "really there" however loses some lustre 50 years later retrospectively. I have no idea how old you are but photos for me bring back good memories I might otherwise not recall. I treasure them. Different strokes for different folks don'tcha know? Thank you for your reply and Happy New Year's 2018 Monday to you.

I had a lot of pictures when I was first married at 19.  Two kids and 7 years later, my wife wanted a divorce.

Married now for 36 years.  Very few pictures on film of my family that I took this time, but many images that would have been memorialized in film have been burned into my brain---along with the memories of the events around them.

I chose to recall things that way---I can't remember the last time I took a picture of a person, family or otherwise.

(Probably a good choice for me based on my previous comment about being 90% visual to 10% auditory.)

Edit:  I seldom look back and review my "archives"---to much still to come. This post was edited by tom jackson at January 1, 2018 8:16 AM MST

Thank you for your reply tom. We used to take pictures all the time when our sons lived close by and so did my sister. When Jim's sis would visit from Nevada or we'd visit her we took pictures. Jim's sis died a few years ago. My sis lives  500 miles away. Our sons live in Hawaii, Nevada and Arizona. Few get-togethers these days.  Not that much to take pictures of any longer.  I like having pictures of those who are no longer in our lives.  They bring back fond memories of what used to be that on my own alone I  would be less likely to recall. It works for me niftily. :) Different strokes!  :)

My ex-wife died a few years ago.  About 6 months later, one of the national science magazines had a picture of a skull on the front cover.

I remarked to a few of my close friends to whom I showed the picture to just how comforting it was to have a recent picture of her.

Funny that you ask this.  Yesterday, I was determined to clear out my wall unit to make room for things that have been sitting on the floor for lack of space.  I came across some old photos that never made it into an album and truly enjoyed reminiscing.  A cousin of mine also sent some photos of my family that I had never seen and it was fun to look at them, too.

I get lots of coinkydinks in my life too  Spunky. Things I'm thinking of doing or recently did or reminisced about someone else comes up with! It makes one wonder if there is such a thing as "coincidence". I'm gonna ask. Thank you for your reply! :)

The fun part of deep cleaning of drawers and cabinets are the things you find that make you smile. :)
