I can be a little obsessive, but that and my ADHD and a few other related tendencies were pretty much eliminated when I started taking medication for my ADHD.

I still have my intelligence, good memory, and my ability to hyper-focus though.  I am quite pleased.

YOU? ADHD? Good golly miss molly I had no clue. So are there any side effects you have to deal with as a result of taking those meds tom? How old were you when it was discovered? People suffer with dyslexia and are thought to be "slow" when in fact they aren't slow at all they just see things differently. We have a grandson who was identified with having ADHD at a very young age and there was a constant battle royale between our son and his wife. The wife insisted the boy be given the pills for it and our son just didn't want him to be medicated 24/7. She won. They divorced. Once one is diagnosed with ADHD can it ever be cured or only lived with? If I'm being too nosy just don't answer what you don't want to answer.  Anyway thank you for your reply! :)

It was about 25 years ago.  We had our youngest boy tested at Scottish Rite hospital for ADHD.  We contacted a psychiatrist who specialized in its diagnosis and treatment, and part of the diagnostic process was a family session where she could observe our son in a setting where his attention was not required and observe how he acted.

As the session ended, she remarked that our son was definitely ADHD.....And that she could treat MY ADHD as well----WHAT??!!

Anyway, I've been on medication (1 pill per day) since then and it changed my life.  Our son was on medication for a while, but we sent him to a place called "Brainworks" that taught him various ways of dealing with coping with the specific problems his ADHD was causing him.  It was very successful.

One of the major problem that I had with my ADHD (and it is a common problem) is producing written output---such as a term paper.  In college anything under 10 pages was an automatic F supposedly.  I routinely turned in 7 to 8 pages and usually got an A.  (I think the professors were aware of ADHD long before psychology took much interest in it.)

At any rate, that's why I tend to precise (at least in my mind) with what I post on here---too long an answer is tiresome for me to produce.

Edit:  ADHD has some advantages---it frequently comes with a high IQ and an excellent memory and an ability to hyper-focus when necessary.  And while it doesn't "go away," it has never been a real problem for me to live with it.  Plus I am not "very, very" ADHD.  This post was edited by tom jackson at January 4, 2018 3:49 AM MST

How smart of them to require a "family" session when examining/investigating such a condition as that. You say the discovery of it in you and the daily pill you take "changed" your life? I assume in a good way. I expect you are probably a genius then and it seems to me that genius comes with a certain kind of "baggage". Why I don't know. Maybe it is a price you have to pay to some unknown "piper" somewhere. Having an excellent memory is priceless. It saves time looking up stuff and comes in handy when you're taking tests or being interviewed for a job someplace that requires KNOWING a lot of stuff and having it easily available to you.  How is your son doing now? Thank you for such a thoughtful and information-filled reply. I appreciate it. I think getting through life is hard enough without added challenges. But maybe it is those challenges that hones you and makes you "better" than you would have been otherwise? I'm gonna hafta think about that but I'm going to ask a question about genius. Thank you for your reply tom! :)
