I have NEVER stiffed anyone in my entire life. Have you? How and why?

Probably.  Whether or not I did is not something I am used to doing.  It is just because I have been on the earth for 67 years, that I would NEVER say without question that I have or have not done something as possible as stiffing someone.

Maybe I was 16 and in a restaurant and did not have enough for a tip.  You saying you've never done that?

    Come on.

    That is stiffing someone.

Normally, I am most generous and most honest with not ever taking a dime from someone unless it is agreed upon by the both of us.

Deadbeats don't pay what they owe for goods and services They are stiffing folks. That is what I mean. Doofus don is well-known for stiffing folks.  I did not use the word to mean "tipping" Sharon. I equate deadbeats with those who stiff folks. Perhaps improperly. I tip when the service warrants it. I am very generous in that regard. I do not tip those who are rude or inept/incompetent. At the age of 16  I don't recall frequenting restaurants on my own. Only on a date in which case I didn't pay for it my date  did. Thank you for your reply and Happy Friday.

Yes, frequently over the years---my wife has always considered it as part of my duty as her husband.

A mildly disappointing reply to my answer.

Andrew Greely was a Catholic diocesan priest, a sociologist (which is field in which I first came across him as a writer) and a fiction author of some note.  (Andrew M. Greeley was an American Roman Catholic priest, sociologist, journalist and popular novelist. Wikipedia)

I read an interview with him---in of all places, TV Guide---many years ago.  He opined that we stop thinking about sex about five minutes after we died, and that we should be more concerned about whether there is sex after marriage rather than whether or not there was sex before marriage.

To think that my wife and I had a meaningful and satisfying sexual relationship in our marriage might be  "TMI"  ('too much information") is, quite frankly, quite appalling to me.

I don't think I have.   I have a lot of empathy for service people that rely on tips to get by.  They would have to be pretty blatantly rude for me to stiff them completely.

I am a very generous tipper when the service warrants it PeaPod. But if someone is rude or really inept/incompetent I don't. That has only happened a couple of times. Folks who wait on you really want to have you be happy with them . Thank you for your reply and Happy Friday to thee! :)

  • Rosie, I have not and would not - though I have sometimes wanted to.
But I'm surprised at your question.
A person who had would be unlikely to admit it unless they's reached the point of being willing to go to jail, or, depending on their state, death.

Doofus don stiffs people all the time and seems to be very proud of it. You would be surprised at the people who do such things who brag about it Hartfire. I remember years ago my son's friend got a grant to attend college because of the way his dad (a CPA) filled out the application forms. He lied through  his teeth to get his kid money and he didn't need it 'cause he was loaded. He didn't hide it. He was not embarrassed by it. He was proud of it! SIGH. There are tons of folks like him who brag about getting away with all kinds of crappy things. Cheating on income taxes is a big one too. Go figger!  Thank you for your reply! :)

  • So does "stiff" mean con or steal in American slang?
If people in America commonly brag about immoral or criminal actions without others ostracising and reporting them, this suggests to me that the entire culture is developing a serious pathology. If that is so, one could describe it as decadent, as in the time of Nero, a sign that the society is beginning to die from the inside, and from the top down.

Those who don't pay their bills we call deadbeats and they "stiff" the people they owe. They don't pay. They incur obligations they don't honor. It is usually used if you dine out and don't tip but when I use the word I mean it to be all-encompassing. Donjohn is famous for "stiffing" folks with whom he has done business. That's why no first-rate lawyer works for him. They don't want to waste their time on a deadbeat. It's a game with deadbeats. See what they can get away with. Some folks think that is really swell and admire deadbeats to he**. Others find them disgusting and shameful. Our local papers used to publish the names of dads who weren't paying child support! To out them and humiliate them. I haven't seen such ads for awhile so maybe they stopped publicizing them. It goes directly to integrity, pride and self-worth.  Some folks have it and some don't. A great example are those who support donjohn. They admire that he gets away with saying egregiously damaging things and doing things like removing protections from our national forests and cutting out entirely or  limiting laws that govern food safety, environmental protections. They don't mind that their kids will be grievously harmed futurely. All they care about is that the weird guy in the white house is doing outrageous and dam*ing things and getting away with it! They are the folks in the audience of a theater who are clapping and cheering for the bad guys. SIGH. Go figger! :( Did I answer your question? Doofus don said the world is laughing at us when he was a prez candidate. I doubt that is true. The world is shocked and dumbfounded that we could allow such a thing to hold the office of prez. The world doesn't like him, doesn't trust him and fears what nincompoopy thing he will do next. His own staff doesn't like him or think anything good about him. Yet he moves forward because our Congress is made up of spineless scairdy cats who put the survival of a Republican prez ahead of the survival of the country and what is good for it.  I don't how or when this nightmare will but I think it is going to end very badly and I don't know if America will ever recover from the tainted and damaged detritus doofus don leaves in his wake. :(. Stiff someone as in not leaving a tip?  Not very often, but I have in the past when the service has been aweful. I don't believe in leaving a tip if the server is rude or provides bad service.

No sweetie. Not paying a bill for services rendered or product received. Being a deadbeat. Doofus don is known for doing that which is why only 3rd-rate lawyers will work for him. The best and brightest refuse to because of his abysmal track record. Never declared bankruptcy either though I know there are times it is not the person's fault if huge medical bills are involved. They can wipe out anyone. Thank you for your reply and Happy Friday to thee PC. I would never tip anyone who provided bad or inept or grudging unpleasant service. I'm a generous tipper when the service is exemplary. :)
